What it is

This project is a work-in-progress port of Perfect Dark based on the game's decompilation, for modern platforms. Its documentation describes it as "mostly functional", with the single-player mode and split-screen multiplayer fully working.

Added features include mouselook, dual-analog controller support, widescreen resolutions, a configurable field of view, 60 FPS (with fixes for frame-rate-related bugs) and basic mod support, enough to load a few custom levels. It does not include the game: you must provide your own ROM.

What you need

Your original copy: Your own Perfect Dark ROM. The recommended one is "ntsc-final" (US V1.1, md5 e03b088b6ac9e0080440efed07c1e40f); the US V1.0 is technically supported but not recommended. The project does not include game data.
  • Officially supported and tested platforms: Windows 7 or later (i686 and x86_64), Linux (i686 and x86_64) and macOS (x86_64 with 10.9 or later, arm64 with 11.0 or later).
  • A Nintendo Switch (arm64) version also exists.
  • The project's README does not publish hardware requirements.

How to install and run it

  1. Get your Perfect Dark ROM and check its md5 against the list in the project's README.
  2. Download the build for your system from the project's automatic builds page (the "Go to the official project" button).
  3. Follow the README's instructions to point it at your ROM the first time and run the game.

Current limitations

  • It is a work in progress: there are minor graphics and gameplay issues and possibly occasional crashes.
  • High frame rate (up to 240 FPS) is experimental and the game has issues above about 165 FPS: use VSync or cap the frame rate.
  • The Japanese and PAL versions are technically supported but require a separately built executable.
  • It is distributed as automatic builds, without numbered releases.

Port or emulator?

If your computer does not meet the requirements, you do not have the exact version the port asks for, or you prefer the classic route, you can play the original with a console emulator: see emulators and its install and setup guide.
