Doom on PC: GZDoom

A Doom source port with an OpenGL and Vulkan renderer, strongly mod-oriented, for Windows, Linux and macOS. You need the game’s data files (IWAD).

What it is

GZDoom is a source port of the Doom engine with an OpenGL and Vulkan renderer, built for people who want mods. It is maintained by the ZDoom and GZDoom teams and contributors, and its code is released under the GPL v3. It brings together the classic Doom, Heretic, Hexen and Strife engines.

The port does not include the commercial game’s data: you need the data file (IWAD) from your copy of Doom, or you can use a free IWAD such as Freedoom. GigaROM hosts neither the port nor the game; the download comes from the official page.

What you need

Your original copy: The data file (IWAD) from your copy of Doom, or a free one such as Freedoom. The project does not include game data.
  • Windows, Linux or macOS.
  • A GPU with OpenGL or Vulkan support.
  • The IWAD from your copy of Doom (for example DOOM.WAD) or a free one such as Freedoom.

How to install and run it

  1. Download the latest release from the project’s official page (“Go to official project” button) or from zdoom.org.
  2. Extract the program and copy your IWAD into its folder, or select it at startup.
  3. Open GZDoom and choose the IWAD; mods load as additional files.

Current limitations

  • The repository README only explains how to build it: the usage guide is on the official wiki.
  • Some old mods may behave differently on a modern engine.

Port or emulator?

If your computer does not meet the requirements, you do not have the exact version the port asks for, or you prefer the classic route, you can play the original with a console emulator: see emulators and its install and setup guide.
