What it is

Quest 64: Recompiled uses N64: Recompiled to statically recompile Quest 64 into a native port with enhancements. It uses RT64 as its rendering engine. It is not an emulator and it does not include any copyrighted assets: you must provide a supported copy of the game.

According to its documentation it offers intact N64 effects, in-game settings menus, high frame rates, widescreen and ultrawide, additional control options, low input lag, near-instant loading and Linux and Steam Deck support.

What you need

Your original copy: Your own copy of the North American 1.0 version of Quest 64, selected in the main menu (there is no separate extraction step). The project does not include game data.
  • A GPU supporting Direct3D 12.0 (Shader Model 6), Vulkan 1.2 or Metal Argument Buffers Tier 2. The oldest that should work: GeForce GT 630, Radeon HD 7750 (the 2012 one), Intel HD 510 (Skylake).
  • On x86-64 PCs, a CPU with SSE4.1 (Intel Core 2 Penryn or AMD Bulldozer and newer). ARM64 builds work on any ARM64 CPU.
  • On Mac: Apple Silicon or a 7th-generation Intel with macOS 13.0 or later.

How to install and run it

  1. Download the latest release from the project's releases page (the "Go to the official project" button).
  2. Open the program.
  3. In the main menu, provide your copy of the North American 1.0 version: the project loads the assets automatically.
  4. On Steam Deck, extract the Linux build, add it to Steam from desktop mode and set up the controller in gaming mode.

Current limitations

  • Only the North American 1.0 version is stated as supported.
  • Overlays such as MSI Afterburner or Wallpaper Engine can cause performance issues that stop the game from rendering correctly; the project recommends disabling them.
  • The only release published so far is 0.1.

Port or emulator?

If your computer does not meet the requirements, you do not have the exact version the port asks for, or you prefer the classic route, you can play the original with a console emulator: see emulators and its install and setup guide.
