Super Metroid on PC: Super Metroid Launcher

A Windows tool that downloads, extracts and builds snesrev’s Super Metroid reimplementation and launches it. You need your own ROM.

What it is

Super Metroid Launcher is a near one-click tool, derived from Zelda 3 Launcher, that prepares and launches on Windows the Super Metroid reimplementation created by snesrev. It downloads the code, extracts the assets from your ROM, builds it and tells you about updates to the original project.

It includes no ROM or game assets. GigaROM hosts nothing: the download is the official repository.

What you need

Your original copy: Your own North American ROM of Super Metroid. The project does not include game data.
  • Windows.
  • Your own copy of the North American Super Metroid ROM (the README gives its SHA-256).

How to install and run it

  1. Download the latest release (“Go to official project” button) and unzip it.
  2. Run Super Metroid Launcher.exe and press the download button; if an sm.sfc sits next to the executable it copies it, otherwise it asks you to pick the ROM.
  3. Wait for the download and build to finish.
  4. Press “Launch Super Metroid” to play; “Restore” repeats the process if something breaks.

Current limitations

  • Windows only.
  • The latest published version is 1.0.1, from 2023.
  • It depends on snesrev’s project.

Port or emulator?

If your computer does not meet the requirements, you do not have the exact version the port asks for, or you prefer the classic route, you can play the original with a console emulator: see emulators and its install and setup guide.
