The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past on PC: Zelda 3 Launcher

A Windows tool that automates downloading, extracting and building snesrev’s Zelda 3 reimplementation, and launches it. You need your own ROM.

Windows

What it is

Zelda 3 Launcher is a near one-click tool that prepares and launches, on Windows, the reimplementation of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past created by snesrev. It downloads the code, extracts the assets from your ROM and builds it, and tells you when the original project has updates.

The launcher includes no ROM or game assets. GigaROM hosts none of this: the download is the official repository.

What you need

Your original copy: Your own North American ROM of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. The project does not include game data.
  • Windows.
  • Your own copy of the North American Zelda 3 ROM (the README gives its SHA-256).
  • Nothing else besides the executable itself.

How to install and run it

  1. Download the latest release from the official page (“Go to official project” button) and unzip it.
  2. Run Zelda 3 Launcher.exe and press the download button; if a zelda3.sfc sits next to the executable it copies it, otherwise it asks you to pick your ROM.
  3. Wait for the download and build to finish (it can take several minutes).
  4. Press “Launch Zelda 3” to play. The “Restore” button repeats the whole process if something breaks.

Current limitations

  • Windows only.
  • It depends on snesrev’s project staying available; the author warns the update feature may not work if there have been no changes.

Port or emulator?

If your computer does not meet the requirements, you do not have the exact version the port asks for, or you prefer the classic route, you can play the original with a console emulator: see emulators and its install and setup guide.
