Jak and Daxter PC Port (OpenGOAL, native trilogy port)

OpenGOAL brings the PS2 Jak and Daxter trilogy to PC (Windows, Linux and macOS). Jak 1 is complete, Jak 2 is in beta and Jak 3 is in progress. You need your own PS2 copy of the game.

What it is

OpenGOAL is an open-source project that brings the PlayStation 2 Jak and Daxter trilogy (Jak 1, Jak II and Jak 3) to PC. Over 98% of the original games was written in GOAL, a custom Lisp-based language from Naughty Dog. The project decompiles that code, has built its own GOAL compiler and provides tools to extract the data from your own copy of the game.

It is not an emulator: it is the game's code rebuilt to run natively. It ships no assets from the original games; it extracts them from your own copy. It is released under the ISC license.

What you need

Your original copy: Your own legitimate PS2 copy of the game (PAL, NTSC and NTSC-J versions, including Greatest Hits). Later PS3, PS4 and PS5 releases are not supported. The project does not include game data.
  • x86-64 processor on Windows, Linux or macOS (on macOS it runs through Rosetta translation).
  • There is no mobile version and none is planned.
  • The project's README does not list hardware requirements; check the installation guide on its website.

How to install and run it

  1. Go to the official website (the “Go to the official project” button) and open the installation guide for your system (Windows, Linux, macOS or Docker).
  2. Have your PS2 copy of the game ready and select it when the installer asks: the project extracts the data from your copy.
  3. Follow the website's instructions to build or install the game and run it.

The repository's README is aimed at developers; users should follow the installation guide and setup video on the official website.

Current limitations

  • Jak 1: considered polished and complete for years.
  • Jak II: in beta with known issues; for a casual user, according to the project, it is “essentially complete”.
  • Jak 3: a good amount of work is still left.
  • If you use a game version other than the default one, you may need to adjust the configuration (gameVersionFolder).

Port or emulator?

If your computer does not meet the requirements, you do not have the exact version the port asks for, or you prefer the classic route, you can play the original with a PlayStation 2 emulator: PCSX2 and its install and setup guide.
