Playable PlayStation 2 Needs your original copy Verified 23/10/2026

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 PC Port (native)

Native, playable port of Budokai Tenkaichi 3 (PS2, USA version) for Windows and Linux. It is not an emulator and you need your own original copy of the game.

WindowsLinuxmacOS (experimental)

What it is

Tenkaichi3Decomp is a community project that turns Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 for PlayStation 2 into a native PC program. It is not an emulator: according to its documentation, it is the game's own code compiled for PC, with a new renderer, sound layer and input layer underneath. It is built on the BT3-Decompiled decompilation project.

Its current status is playable: it boots, plays the opening movie and menus, saves games and supports fights and split screen. Online play is experimental. It has both a Vulkan and an OpenGL renderer.

The project does not include game data: you need your own original copy to use it. GigaROM does not host the port or the game; you get it from the project's official page.

What you need

Your original copy: Your own unmodified USA disc image (SLUS-21678). The project does not include game data.
  • Windows 10 or 11, Linux (glibc 2.35 or newer) or macOS on Apple Silicon (experimental, built from source).
  • On Windows and Linux, a 64-bit x86 processor (a recent mid-range CPU is recommended) and a Vulkan-capable graphics card. An OpenGL 3.3 renderer is available but slower.
  • About 4 GB of disk space.

How to install and run it

  1. Go to the project's official page (the “Go to the official project” button) and download the latest version from the Releases section.
  2. Unpack the package and run Tenkaichi3Decomp-setup (.exe on Windows).
  3. Choose your unmodified USA .iso disc image (SLUS-21678). The setup checks that it matches the expected one.
  4. Press Play. The first time, the setup unpacks the game data next to the program.
  5. If your graphics card has problems with Vulkan, you can force OpenGL with the environment variable BT3_GPU_API=gl.

On Linux you can also build from source with python3 install.py --iso <your image>. The full, up-to-date instructions are in the project's README.

Current limitations

  • Smooth motion (above 60 fps) is experimental and off by default; it looks uneven at 240 fps and has seen little OpenGL testing.
  • Online play is experimental: both players need the same release, and the 32-bit Linux build has no rollback.
  • Stages and songs added from outside the disc are not saved and are not offered in online matches.
  • Online play on macOS has not been tested across two machines.
  • Vulkan may be incomplete on some older graphics cards (the project cites Intel Ivy Bridge).

Port or emulator?

If your computer does not meet the requirements, you do not have the exact version the port asks for, or you prefer the classic route, you can play the original with a PlayStation 2 emulator: PCSX2 and its install and setup guide.
