What it is

Snap64 Recomp is a native port of Pokémon Snap (Nintendo 64, US release) made with N64: Recompiled and RT64. It runs on Windows, Linux, Steam Deck and macOS, and a beta exists for Android phones and handhelds. It is not an emulator and it does not include any copyrighted assets: you must provide a supported copy of the game.

By default it plays like the original cartridge; widescreen, higher frame rates, mouse or gyro aim, button rebinding, fast forward and photo export are turned on from the game's own options. The project warns that it is only released on its repository's releases page and that fake copies exist elsewhere.

What you need

Your original copy: Your own ROM of the US version (SHA-1 edc7c49cc568c045fe48be0d18011c30f393cbaf). .z64, .v64 and .n64 files work; the Japanese, European and Australian versions do not. The project does not include game data.
  • 64-bit Windows 10 (version 1809 or newer) or 11, with a GPU whose driver supports Direct3D 12 with Shader Model 6.3.
  • Linux and Steam Deck: a Vulkan 1.2 driver and either Flatpak or the system's SDL2 and GTK 3; the Linux builds are experimental.
  • macOS 14 (Sonoma) or newer, on Apple Silicon or Intel; the project says the Mac build has not yet been tested on a physical machine.
  • Android (beta): Android 10 or newer, 64-bit (arm64) and a Vulkan 1.2 driver; it has been tested on a single phone.
  • A 64-bit CPU with SSE4.1.

How to install and run it

  1. Download the file for your system only from the repository's releases page (the "Go to the official project" button); each file has a .sha256 for verification.
  2. On Windows, extract the zip and run Snap64Recomp.exe; nothing needs to be installed.
  3. Place your ROM named pokemonsnap.z64 next to the program or start it and pick it: the program checks the file and refuses a wrong one.
  4. On Android, install the release APK, give it your ROM and play with a pad or the touch controls.

Current limitations

  • Only the US ROM works.
  • The Android version is a beta: it has been tested on one phone and on the Android emulator, and not yet with a real pad.
  • The Linux builds are experimental and the Mac build has not been tested on a physical machine.

Port or emulator?

If your computer does not meet the requirements, you do not have the exact version the port asks for, or you prefer the classic route, you can play the original with a console emulator: see emulators and its install and setup guide.
