What it is

OpenTyrian is an open-source port of the DOS game Tyrian, an arcade-style vertical scrolling shooter. The story is set in 20,031, where you play as Trent Hawkins, a skilled fighter pilot employed to fight MicroSol and save the galaxy. It features a story mode, one- and two-player arcade modes and networked multiplayer.

The Windows, macOS and Linux builds contain everything needed to run the game, including the freeware Tyrian 2.1 data files. On macOS the app is not notarized: if Gatekeeper refuses to open it, right-click it, choose Open and confirm once. GigaROM does not host the game; the download comes from the official page.

What you need

Your original copy: Nothing extra: the builds include the freeware Tyrian 2.1 data. The project does not include game data.
  • Windows, Linux or macOS.

How to install and run it

  1. Download the build for your platform from the official page (“Go to official project” button).
  2. Extract it and run it (opentyrian.exe on Windows, OpenTyrian.app on macOS or ./opentyrian on Linux).
  3. Choose story or arcade mode and play.

Current limitations

  • On macOS you have to open it with right-click the first time (it is not notarized).
  • Networked multiplayer requires players to connect to each other.

Port or emulator?

If your computer does not meet the requirements, you do not have the exact version the port asks for, or you prefer the classic route, you can play the original with a console emulator: see emulators and its install and setup guide.
