Heretic II on PC: Heretic2R

A reverse-engineered source port of Heretic II (Raven Software, 1998): widescreen with automatic HUD scaling, decoupled framerate, OGG music, improved map loading times and many bugfixes.

Windows

What it is

Heretic2R is a reverse-engineered source port of Heretic II (1998, Raven Software). Features include widescreen support with automatic HUD scaling, rendering framerate decoupled from the network packet sending rate (with a theoretical maximum of 1000 FPS), OGG music playback, most special effects updated at the rendering framerate instead of 20 FPS, improved map loading times, lots of cosmetic improvements and many bugfixes.

It requires Heretic II game data: you can overwrite the Heretic II binaries with the Heretic2R ones, or copy the “Heretic II\base” folder (excluding all .dll files) into the Heretic2R folder. Your copy must be updated to v1.06. GigaROM hosts neither the port nor the game; the download comes from the official page.

Port or emulator?

If your computer does not meet the requirements, you do not have the exact version the port asks for, or you prefer the classic route, you can play the original with a console emulator: see emulators and its install and setup guide.
