What it is

Donkey Kong 64: Recompiled uses N64: Recompiled to statically recompile Donkey Kong 64 into a native port with enhancements. It uses RT64 as its rendering engine. It is not an emulator and it does not include any copyrighted assets: you must provide a supported copy of the game.

It is not based on the source code of a decompilation: static recompilation makes it possible to build a port without source code. It offers intact N64 effects, in-game settings menus, high frame rates, low input lag, near-instant loading and Linux and Steam Deck support.

What you need

Your original copy: Your own copy of Donkey Kong 64 (check the project's README for the exact version). The project does not include game data.
  • A GPU supporting Direct3D 12.0 (Shader Model 6) or Vulkan 1.2. The oldest that should work: GeForce GT 630, Radeon HD 7750 (the 2012 one), Intel HD 510 (Skylake).
  • A CPU supporting the AVX instruction set (Intel Core 2000 series or AMD Bulldozer and newer).
  • If you get crashes at launch, update your graphics drivers.

How to install and run it

  1. Download the latest release from the project's releases page (the "Go to the official project" button).
  2. Open the program and select your copy of the game when asked.
  3. On Steam Deck, extract the Linux build, add it to Steam from desktop mode and set up the controller in gaming mode.

Current limitations

  • Overlays such as MSI Afterburner or Wallpaper Engine can cause performance issues; the project recommends disabling them.
  • External frame limiters can cause stuttering.
  • The README does not detail the exact game version or memory requirements.

Port or emulator?

If your computer does not meet the requirements, you do not have the exact version the port asks for, or you prefer the classic route, you can play the original with a console emulator: see emulators and its install and setup guide.
