What it is

doukutsu-rs is a reimplementation of the Cave Story (Doukutsu Monogatari) engine with many quality-of-life improvements, letting you enjoy the 2004 indie classic like a modern game. It supports the original freeware, Cave Story+ and Nintendo Switch data files, and is available for Windows, Linux, macOS and Android, with stable, beta and nightly builds.

The repository contains no game data: the engine must be paired with compatible data files, such as the freeware ones, NXEngine(-evo)’s or those from a supported copy of Cave Story+. GigaROM hosts neither the engine nor the game; the download comes from the official page.

What you need

Your original copy: Compatible data files: freeware Cave Story, NXEngine(-evo), Cave Story+ or the Nintendo Switch version. The project does not include game data.
  • Windows, Linux (also Flatpak), macOS (Intel or Apple M1) or Android.
  • Compatible data files: those of freeware Cave Story, NXEngine(-evo) or a supported copy of Cave Story+ or the Nintendo Switch version.

How to install and run it

  1. Download the stable build from the official page (“Go to official project” button) or from get.doukutsu.rs.
  2. Place the compatible data files where the program indicates (on Android, the README explains how with the “Files” app).
  3. Open doukutsu-rs and play.

Current limitations

  • It will not start without compatible data files.
  • On macOS, if you get a “can’t be opened” message, right-click the app and choose “Open”.
  • The Epic Games Store version needs extra steps described in the README.

Port or emulator?

If your computer does not meet the requirements, you do not have the exact version the port asks for, or you prefer the classic route, you can play the original with a console emulator: see emulators and its install and setup guide.
