Banjo-Tooie PC Port (Banjo-Tooie: Recompiled)

Banjo-Tooie (USA version) recompiled as a native port for Windows and Linux, with widescreen and high refresh rates. You need your own US ROM.

WindowsLinux

What it is

This is a native port of Banjo-Tooie (USA) produced by statically recompiling the original ROM with N64Recomp and rendering with RT64. The recompiler translates the game's MIPS code to C once; there is no emulator at runtime. The result is a normal Windows executable with widescreen, high refresh rates and an in-game settings menu.

The repository contains no game assets: the ROM is supplied through the launcher's "Select ROM" option and is never downloaded or bundled. Its status, according to the README, is "playable end to end" and it has been verified on Windows x64.

What you need

Your original copy: Your own ROM of Banjo-Tooie (USA), given through the launcher's "Select ROM" option. The project does not include game data.
  • A GPU with Direct3D 12 (Shader Model 6) or Vulkan 1.2: GeForce GT 630, Radeon HD 7750 (2012) or Intel HD 510 (Skylake), or newer.
  • On x86-64, a CPU with SSE4.1 (Intel Core 2 Penryn or AMD Bulldozer and newer).

How to install and run it

  1. Download the latest release from the project's releases page (the "Go to the official project" button).
  2. Open the launcher and click "Select ROM" to choose your US ROM.
  3. Adjust the aspect ratio and refresh rate in the game's menu.

Current limitations

  • The skybox does not reach the sides of a 16:9 frame with the "Expand" aspect ratio, because the sky dome was authored for 4:3; "Original" avoids it. The project considers it a limitation of the original game.
  • The Linux build is newer and less exercised than the Windows one.
  • Only the USA ROM is stated as supported.

Port or emulator?

If your computer does not meet the requirements, you do not have the exact version the port asks for, or you prefer the classic route, you can play the original with a console emulator: see emulators and its install and setup guide.
